Our Year 8 students recently took part in the exciting Race to the Line Bio challenge — a national STEM initiative designed to inspire creativity, teamwork and a passion for science and engineering.
This engaging, cross-curricular project gave students the opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills in an exciting and competitive way.
Working in small teams, students were tasked with designing, building and racing model rocket cars.
Throughout the project, they explored the principles of physics by applying Newton’s Laws of Motion, considered the effects of aerodynamics on speed and stability and used a variety of manufacturing techniques to construct their designs.
Once completed, the cars were “fired” down a race track using carbon dioxide propulsion, allowing teams to test whose design achieved the fastest time.
The challenge provided valuable hands-on experience with tools and materials, helping students develop confidence in practical STEM skills. Beyond the technical aspects, the project also encouraged collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking – essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
The Race to the Line Bio challenge continues to be a highlight of the Year 8 STEM curriculum, sparking enthusiasm for innovation and giving students a taste of real-world engineering in action.
