RSC Director Mentor Inspires Students Ahead of Playmaking Festival

Students at Dowdales School had an exciting and inspiring rehearsal experience this week as Nicky Cox visited to work closely with performers preparing for the upcoming Playmaking Festival 2026.

As part of Dowdales School’s long-standing partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nicky spent the day guiding students through scenes from this year’s production of The Winter’s Tale. During the workshop sessions, students explored the language of Shakespeare in greater depth, developing a stronger understanding of both the meaning behind the text and the emotions driving each character.

The sessions also focused on movement and staging, helping students bring the scenes to life physically while building confidence in their performances. Through practical exercises and detailed character work, students were encouraged to think carefully about relationships, motivations, and how scenes could be effectively presented to an audience.

Nicky’s energetic, positive and enthusiastic approach created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the rehearsals. Students responded brilliantly to her encouragement and expertise, gaining valuable insight into the creative process and professional theatre-making techniques.

The workshop forms an important part of preparations for the Dowdales Playmaking Festival, which will take place on Thursday 25th June 2026. The event will showcase performances from Dowdales students alongside pupils from the school’s RSC Associate School, celebrating young talent and the continuing partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
