Rotary Young Chef District Final
Two talented students from Dowdales proudly represented the school at the Rotary Young Chef District Final – and what a fantastic achievement it turned out to be.
The competition brought together 15 finalists from nine schools across Rotary District 1190, covering Cumbria and Lancashire. With over 100 contestants initially entering, reaching this stage was already an impressive accomplishment.
Hosted at the Lakes School, the standard of cooking was exceptionally high, with around 13 competitors competing on the night. Dowdales students Lily and Beau rose to the challenge brilliantly. Both impressed judges with the quality and presentation of their dishes, as well as their professionalism throughout – leaving their workstations spotless at the end.
In an outstanding result, Lily was crowned the District Winner. Her creativity, skill, and composure under pressure secured her first place and progression to the next stage of the competition.
Following the event, Martin from the Rotary visited Dowdales to present Lily and Beau with their certificates, recognising their hard work and success.
Success at the Regional Final
Lily went on to compete in the Cluster (Regional) Final in Carlisle – and once again delivered an exceptional performance.
Walking into Carlisle College’s industrial kitchen could have been daunting, but Lily took it all in her stride and truly did the school proud. Competing against six other finalists from across the North East, Yorkshire and Lancashire, she demonstrated remarkable confidence and skill.
Lily received fantastic feedback from the judges and was awarded runner-up, an incredible achievement at such a high level of competition.
Prior to the competition Lily had the opportunity to work with Stephen Doherty, a highly respected chef best known for his time at the renowned Le Gavroche. As a former head chef of the Michelin-starred restaurant, Stephen Doherty brings a wealth of experience and expertise, and his guidance clearly helped Lily refine her skills and confidence ahead of the competition.
Praise from Staff
Mrs Gibson, Head of Design & Technology, said:
“I’m so proud of her and have no doubt that the work she did with Steven Doherty really helped prepare her for this next level – a special thank you to him for his support and expertise.”
A Proud Moment for Dowdales
