This week, our Dance department had the pleasure of hosting a dynamic and engaging workshop led by Kelly, the Cumbria Outreach Co-ordinator from Lowry CAT. The session brought together our Year 10 GCSE dancers alongside our incoming Year 9 cohort, creating an exciting opportunity for collaboration, creativity and shared learning. We were also delighted to have our two Year 11 students, who are currently part of the CAT programme, join the workshop – providing excellent role models and inspiration for the younger students.
The workshop focused on both technical development and creative exploration. Students were encouraged to refine their movement quality while also taking risks with choreography, responding to prompts and ideas in imaginative ways. A key part of the session involved students working in pairs to create short pieces centred around movement concepts such as push, pull, support, lift and gather. This collaborative task not only strengthened their understanding of physical contact and connection but also challenged them to communicate meaning through movement.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated impressive focus, energy and commitment.
Following the workshop, students now have an exciting pathway ahead. They have the opportunity to audition in Manchester for further training through the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) programme. This prestigious scheme is designed for young people with exceptional potential in dance, offering high-quality, pre-professional training alongside their regular education.
The CAT programme places a strong emphasis on developing well-rounded dancers. It supports students in strengthening areas they may find challenging – whether that’s technical precision, flexibility, strength, or performance confidence—while also nurturing creativity and individuality. Participants benefit from expert teaching, performance opportunities, and a structured environment that prepares them for future training or careers in dance.
Overall, the workshop was an inspiring experience that has left students motivated, confident and excited about their next steps in dance.
