Our Dowdales Geography students enjoyed an unforgettable adventure to Iceland, exploring some of the country’s most spectacular natural landscapes and discovering first-hand the geographical processes they have studied in the classroom.
Educational visits are an important part of life at Dowdales, giving students opportunities to broaden their experiences, develop their understanding of the world and create lasting memories with their friends. Our Iceland trip was a fantastic example of this in action!
During their five-day visit, students explored Iceland’s dramatic volcanic landscapes, geothermal hot springs, powerful waterfalls and fascinating geological features. Accompanied by staff and local guides, the group enjoyed a packed itinerary that brought their Geography studies to life.
Highlights included visiting the Bridge Between the Continents, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, and witnessing the bubbling geothermal activity at Gunnuhver Hot Springs. The group also visited the impressive Lava Centre, learning more about Iceland’s volcanic history and the forces that continue to shape the island.
The South Shore tour provided plenty of opportunities to admire Iceland’s breathtaking scenery, including the magnificent waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi and Skógafoss, alongside a visit to the coastal village of Vík.
Students also experienced Iceland’s famous geothermal waters at the Secret Lagoon and explored the highlights of the Golden Circle. This included the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall, the erupting geysers of the Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty and significant geological and historical importance.
Beyond the geographical learning, the trip gave students the chance to experience a different culture, enjoy new experiences and strengthen friendships. Travelling together, exploring unfamiliar places and sharing such incredible sights made this a memorable experience for everyone involved.
We are incredibly proud of our students for representing Dowdales School and hope they return with a greater understanding of the world around them, plenty of stories to share and memories they will treasure for years to come.
A huge thank you to our staff team for accompanying the students and helping to make this fantastic opportunity possible.
