A group of Year 10 mathematicians had the fantastic opportunity to attend Florence Nightingale Day at Lancaster University – a special event designed to celebrate the power of mathematics and inspire young people, especially girls, to explore maths and statistics in further study and future careers.
Throughout the day, students took part in inspiring talks delivered by female mathematicians and statisticians, gaining insight into real-world research and the exciting possibilities that a degree in maths or statistics can offer. They also worked together in a mathematics challenge quiz, testing their problem-solving skills and teamwork alongside students from other schools across the region.
The event honours Florence Nightingale’s legacy, not only as a pioneering nurse but also as a trailblazer in statistics and data visualisation – reminding us that maths isn’t just something in textbooks, but a tool for shaping real change.
Well done to all our students who represented Dowdales so brilliantly; your enthusiasm, collaboration and creative thinking were impressive throughout the day!
