Our Year 10 and 11 students have just returned from an action-packed five-day visit to Munich as part of our long-standing exchange with Werner Heisenberg School, now in its seventh year. The trip gave students a brilliant opportunity to use their German language skills in real situations while experiencing Bavarian culture alongside their German peers.
Day 1
Students arrived in Munich and headed straight into the festive spirit with an evening visit to the city’s traditional Christmas markets.
Day 2
The group spent the morning at Werner Heisenberg School, meeting their pen friends and taking part in lessons and activities. In the afternoon, students explored the markets and city centre with their German peers, completing an Elf on the Shelf photo challenge along the way.
Day 3
The day began with a tour of the impressive Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich and club of Lioness and former Dowdalian, Georgia Stanway. This was followed by lunch in Munich’s famous Hofbräuhaus. In the afternoon and evening, students enjoyed the slides, pools and spa-themed areas at Therme Erding, one of Europe’s largest water parks.
Day 4
A highlight of the trip: a journey into the Alps to the Zugspitze glacier, the highest peak in Germany. Students had the chance to go sledging in the snow and even place one foot into Austria at the border point on the summit.
Day 5
On the final morning, students enjoyed some outdoor ice skating and one last trip to the markets before heading home.
Throughout the visit, students strengthened their confidence in German, built friendships with their exchange partners and experienced a fantastic mix of culture, adventure and fun.
A memorable week for everyone involved.
