Students Come First

Dowdales is a successful school that offers every student a world class education and challenges students and staff to be the best they can be.  As an Ofsted rated ‘good’ school, with much of our work ‘outstanding’, we believe in high expectations, excellent teaching and ambition for every young person.

Students come first. From Year 7 we encourage the right behaviour from students that pushes them on to aim high and to fulfil their potential.  Every child is helped to develop the knowledge, skills and values to prepare them for life in modern Britain.

Our students are exceptional. Their 96 percent attendance underlines that they enjoy being at Dowdales. They respect the traditions of the school: smart uniform and personal appearance. Ofsted judged behaviour and safety both to be outstanding.

Teaching and learning is at the heart of all that we do. High quality, inspirational teaching across a modern curriculum leads to outstanding outcomes that prepare students for jobs or further study and that open doors for the future. Students focus on the core skills of Literacy, Numeracy and Communication whilst our E Bacc programme offers the choice of French, Spanish and German for their Language studies, coupled with outstanding Humanities provision.  Every year our students gain places at Oxford and Cambridge and go on to top Russell group universities.

Dowdales is a creative school.  Having Arts Mark Gold, students work with professionals from international Arts organisations such as EMI Music Foundation, Rambert and the Royal Shakespeare company.  Equally strong is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), subjects in which students work with professionals from BAE, GlaxoSmithKline, Rolls Royce and Bentley.

There is outstanding guidance for all, including students who are gifted and talented and those with special educational needs. Outstanding support for students’ well-being and welfare ensures that they leave us as confident, accomplished learners and achievers, broad minded, able to think for themselves and self-motivated to succeed.  They relish taking on leadership roles, contributing to our school community as well as the wider community.

Students and staff are proud to call themselves Dowdalians. Students thrive and staff continually develop their skills. Coaching is central to our ethos with staff making use of our Teaching and Leadership Development rooms to further their practice. Colleagues work as system leaders across Cumbria, many taking up and going on to promoted posts.

Dowdales is an exciting place to be. Come and see the school in action to see and feel the enthusiasm for learning that drives everyone to achieve their best. We look forward to you being part of our continuing success.
