Student Achievement

Students at Dowdales are second to none and our aim is to provide them with as many opportunities as possible, encouraging them to be the best they can be in all that they do.

Their achievements, both inside and outside of the classroom, are remarkable and show that hard work and dedication are key when striving to achieve their very best.

During the school year students take part in many exciting activities including extra-curricular competitions across all subjects, educational study visits, residential excursions, fundraising and outdoor educational pursuits to name but a few.

Celebrating Success

In order to celebrate our students' successes the Headteacher writes a weekly blog, published on our website, and we produce a half-termly newsletter, In the Spotlight at Dowdales, highlighting their achievements. We also hold an Achievers Awards Assembly at the end of every term where students are presented with certificates for outstanding focus and performance.

Opportunities

Educational Study Visits, Residential Excursions and Outdoor Educational Pursuits

Students have fantastic opportunities to visit places of educational interest both in the UK and further afield. Whether this be a visit to Cambridge University for our aspirational students, a trip to the Royal Society for our Science ambassadors or a week-long trip to an Austrian ski school, students gain valuable knowledge and experience which enables them to make informed choices about their future.

Competitions and Achievements

Whether representing their form group, their year group, the school or the Furness area students are encouraged to compete in various competitions in their chosen subjects.

We also have a number of students, both past and present, who represent Cumbria and Great Britain in their chosen discipline.

World Challenge

In November 2014 a group of students took part in the school’s first World Challenge Expedition to Nepal and we are now preparing for the next expedition to Malaysia in 2017.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is available to our Year 10 students. Practice expeditions take place in April and May with the final expeditions taking place in June and July.

Fundraising

Fundraising is very important to us. We hold a number of events throughout the school year raising much needed funds for various charities. This year we supported charities such as Cancer Research, Barrow Homeless Shelter, Barrow Foodbank and most recently the Oxfam Nepal Fund.
