The overall aim of the PE department is to increase the participation and activity levels of the whole school, through physical activity. We seek to promote all aspects of P.E. and active recreation, and encourage our students to develop physically, personally, socially and morally. Group and independent learning are central to our work.
The school has a range of facilities including the Dowdales Active Sports Hall (DASH) which is an indoor sports centre featuring full sports facilities. We also have an outdoor floodlit court, a gymnasium and three large sports fields.
Dowdales have achieved considerable success in recent years at local, regional and national level, including our rugby league teams gaining the National Schools title on three separate occasions. We achieve very well locally, winning around 50% of the local competitions with most teams going on to compete at regional level following this. We have featured regularly in the later rounds of national championships in table-tennis and rugby league.
Student achievements have been recognised many times over the last few years being nominated and/or winning Junior Team or Junior Sportsperson of the Year Awards at both the Barrow Sports Awards and the prestigious Cumbria Sports Awards and also receiving recognition at the Rugby League School of the Year awards at Old Trafford.
We have also had a large number of students who have gained International Honours in sport whilst at Dowdales and some who have gone on to become professional sportsmen and women in sports as varied as basketball, football (male and female), rugby league, karate, table-tennis and speedway.
Extra-curricular activities are a particular strength of the school with many varied practices and high quality sports fixtures. The school runs teams in most major sports with a full local fixtures programme and in the last few years have competed at regional (North or NW of England) level in netball, football, cricket, basketball, athletics, cross-country, table-tennis and rugby league. In table-tennis and rugby league the school regularly competes at National level and have been National champions in recent Years.
