Numeracy at Dowdales

At Dowdales we strive for every student to have access to the best possible mathematics education, not just in their maths lessons but in the numeracy being delivered in other subjects.  We are committed to developing the numeracy skills of our learners, in the belief that it will support their learning, enabling them to access the whole curriculum and in turn raise standards for all.

In order to help raise standards as a school we have worked hard to promote a love of numbers and every year our students take part in a number of events to help build an enjoyment for numeracy.  This includes National Number Day where students spend the day fundraising by completing mathematical activities with proceeds going to the NSPCC.  We also engage fully with National Pi Day and encourage our students to take part in the events of the day.  We aim to involve every child by breaking down any fears they may have around numeracy through encouragement and support, and a belief that all children can learn to love maths.

Standards of numeracy teaching in other curriculum areas is constantly being improved and we aim to support staff in the deliverance of the maths content through workshops and training.  This allows for us to adopt consistent approaches and help our students to transfer their mathematical skills into other subject areas, applying techniques to problem solving and real world context.
