Modern Languages

Through studying a foreign language, students develop skills and strategies in communication, group work, problem-solving and independent study, not forgetting the opportunity to also develop and deepen cultural awareness.

Students also learn about the culture of the country whose language they are studying, and have the chance to discuss similarities and differences to our own.

Speaking is an essential skill which the students work on throughout the Year 7, 8 and 9. We encourage the students to work collaboratively in lessons to develop confidence in this area, and pair and group work activities are a regular part of our lessons.

Bilingual Forms

When joining Dowdales Year 7 students can apply for a place in the Bilingual Form.

This means that these students have their form time conducted in a foreign language, with the aim of supporting and furthering the language learned as part of the school curriculum.

This scheme also improves motivation, confidence and enhances opportunities for students to become independent learners.
