Key Stage 3

In Science at Key Stage 3 students learn about how scientists work to develop theories, the ways scientists communicate and present data.  They consider the influence of Science on society and the effect of society on Science.

Over Years 7, 8 and 9 students will study a wide range of topics in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students plan and carry out investigations and learn about scientific developments and cutting edge advancements in the field.

All students will develop their use of evidence to support arguments, debate controversial issues and present and teach Science to one another. Students reflect on their progress throughout Key Stage 3 and learn about how the first three years in Science at Dowdales prepares them for their GCSEs.

Year 7

In Year 7 students will study Cells-structure and function, Reproduction in animals and plants, diet and the digestive system, solids, liquids, gases and atoms, acids and alkalis, testing gases, forces and motion, types of energy, conduction and radiation and how power stations work.

Year 8

In Year 8 students will study respiration and how the lungs work, muscles and the skeletal system, photosynthesis, genetics, atomic structure and equations, separating mixtures, types of chemical reaction, rock types, waves-light and sound, electricity and  electromagnets and space.

Year 9

In Year 9 students will study diet, digestion and enzymes, photosynthesis, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, food webs, periodic table, types of material, rates of reaction, acids and alkalis, exo and endothermic reactions, atmosphere, waves, electricity and magnetism and electromagnets.
